Louis van Gaal surprised by set-piece struggles against Bournemouth

Louis van Gaal admits that Manchester United's failure to defend set-pieces was key to the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth.

Louis van Gaal has claimed that Manchester United paid the price for being vulnerable at set-pieces in the 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth.

David de Gea was at fault for the first goal as Junior Stanislas found the back of the net directly from a corner, before Joshua King found the space to fire home the winner after being picked out by Matt Ritchie in the second half.

Despite pointing to the two errors as key factors behind the loss, Van Gaal believes that his players were the victims of an impressive display from the Cherries.

"Two set-plays cost us. That is not normal for us because we give a lot of attention to organisation. They had a few variations and did it very well but still it cannot be," the Dutchman told Sky Sports.

"We played rather well in the first half and I had the feeling we could win in the second half but then a set play and you are behind in the score and it is very difficult to have a revival.

"The players had done everything but Bournemouth pressed on the ball in a fantastic way which made it difficult to get the equaliser or create chances."

United have won just three of their last 12 games in all competitions.
