Report: Barcelona to beat Manchester United to Thomas Vermaelen signature

Barcelona steal a march on Manchester United and emerge as favourites to land Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen, according to reports.

Barcelona are reportedly poised to pip Manchester United to the signing of Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen this summer.

The Spanish giants are said to have stolen a march on Louis van Gaal's side due to the Gunners' reluctance to sell to one of their Premier League rivals.

New Barca boss Luis Enrique is believed to have identified Vermaelen as an ideal candidate to lead their defence this season and, according to The Mirror, the Catalans are now favourites to secure the Belgian's signature.

The 28-year-old will be available on a Bosman next summer, should he remain in north London this season.
