A report claims that Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has acknowledged that handing Alexis Sanchez such a lucrative contract was a big mistake.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has reportedly admitted in private that he made a mistake by signing Alexis Sanchez.

The Red Devils beat bitter rivals Manchester City to the Chilean forward's signature by offering him a £500,000-a-week contract to join from Arsenal in January 2018.

That deal, which still has over three years to run, makes Sanchez the best-paid player in Premier League history.

Sanchez has struggled to make any sort of impact at Old Trafford, though, scoring five times in 42 matches, and he has only featured twice since February because of a knee injury.

According to The Times, Woodward acknowledges that signing the 30-year-old on such a lucrative contract was a big mistake.

The report also indicates that United will look to recoup as much money as possible for Sanchez this summer.
