Andre Ayew: 'Marseille were dominant against Arsenal'

Andre Ayew says that Marseille showed that they can compete in the Champions League after a "dominant" performance against Arsenal

Marseille winger Andre Ayew believes that his side's "dominant" display against Arsenal on Wednesday proves that they can progress in the Champions League.

The French outfit were beaten 2-1 by the Gunners at the Stade Velodrome in their opening match of Group F.

"We played a good match overall; we were dominant and we showed we have the quality to be in the Champions League," Ayew told reporters. "Now we need to show more experience and more efficiency up front and at the back, but this game is a good omen for the rest of the competition.

"We have a long road back now, but Arsenal were well-organised. They're a team that's good in the air, with [Per] Mertesacker and [Laurent] Koscielny, so they more or less let us cross as much as we wanted and tried to take care of things in the middle.

"[For the first goal] it's easy to talk about things from the outside, but after the cross came in [Jeremy Morel] didn't see the ball. He tried to clear it any way he could and Walcott was fortunate that it fell in front of him. For me, that's not a mistake; it's one of those things that happen in games. Now we need to use this match to improve."

Ayew added that he and his teammates must now look forward.

"We need to look on the bright side," he said. "We are not going to give up. We have to do everything to seize our chance.

"Whether we manage it or not, we have nothing to lose. We have to be positive and we'll go to Dortmund with a lot of ambition."

Marseille make the trip to Bastia in Ligue 1 on Saturday.
