Middlesbrough have completed the signing of Birmingham University student Christian Burgess.
Burgess had given up a career on football following his release from Arsenal as a youngster.
However, Boro boss Tony Mowbray has decided to hand the 20-year-old a two-year deal after receiving positive reports from scouts.
"I'm really looking forward to the challenge of professional football at Middlesbrough," Burgess told the club's official website.
"This is the opportunity I have always wanted. I've spoken briefly with Tony Mowbray and it's nice that he has shown some confidence in me.
"I'm looking forward to getting started next season and making the most of this chance."
Burgess is usually deployed as a centre-back.
