Oxford United striker Dave Kitson retires from football

Former Stoke City and Reading striker Dave Kitson announces his retirement from professional football.

Oxford United striker Dave Kitson has announced his retirement from football after a 13-year professional career.

The 34-year-old made his debut for Cambridge United in 2001 before joining Reading two years later.

Kitson helped the Royals to win promotion to the Premier League before moving to Stoke City for £5.5m in 2008.

"We respect that decision and wish Dave all the best for the future," Oxford United head coach Michael Appleton told BBC Sport.

Kitson also played for Portsmouth, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough during his career.
