Toby Alderweireld: "We deserved more"

Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld insists that his side deserved to take something from their defeat against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld believes that his side deserved at least a point from their Premier League clash against Sunderland.

A brace of penalties from Jordi Gomez fired the Black Cats to a 2-1 victory over Ronald Koeman's side, who were reduced to 10 men in the second half when James Ward-Prowse was dismissed for bringing down Jermain Defoe in the area.

"I think we deserved more from this," Alderweireld told the club's official website.

"Especially when you play 25-30 minutes with ten men because I think then we played our best football and deserved at least a point.

"We were very happy with the 1-1 but then we made too many mistakes and didn't get in our game. We had to punish them and we didn't do it."

Southampton are seventh in the Premier League following their defeat to Dick Advocaat's side.
