Jose Fonte: 'It's a crucial summer for Southampton'

Jose Fonte believes that this summer is crucial for Southampton if they want to push for a top six place in the Premier League next season.

Southampton defender Jose Fonte believes that there is a big summer ahead for the club amid uncertainty over manager Mauricio Pochettino and a number of star players.

Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana are among the Saints stars being tipped with big-money summer departures, while Pochettino's long-term future is yet to be secured.

Fonte believes that it is vital for the club to bring in new talent this summer in a bid to push for the top six next season.

According to the Daily Echo, when asked if this is a crucial summer for the Saints, Fonte said: "Yes, definitely so. We will wait to see what is going to happen.

"Of course [top six] is the aim, but we need to see what happens this summer. If the club decides to go for it or not.

"We want to be successful and to push forward for better things so let's hope that they can match the ambition of the players."

Southampton are currently eighth in the table on 52 points with two games left to play.
