Graziano Pelle came close to opening the scoring for his new club after just four minutes after rounding defender Nathan Byrne for a early shot, but could not keep his finish on target.
The new signing had another shot just a couple of minutes later, but could only head wide from Nathan Clyne's cross into the box.
Southampton continued to dominate the opening 25 minutes, but almost gifted Swindon a goal when Jose Fonte overhit a back-pass to Kelvin Davis, but the keeper managed to rescue the situation.
The visitors finally managed to take the lead six minutes into the second half when Hooiveld poked the ball into the back of the net from close range following a James Ward-Prowse corner.
Ward-Prowse had a chance to double their lead just a couple of minutes later, but flicked the ball a fraction high with a headed effort.
Ronald Koeman made wholesale changes towards the end of the match, allowing the hosts to see more of the ball in the final 10 minutes.
Jack Bartham and Connor Waldon put the Southampton defenders under pressure late on, but Swindon were unable to find an equaliser.
