Sir Trevor Brooking insists that his past feud with Harry Redknapp did not sway the FA's decision to appoint Roy Hodgson as England manager.

Football Association director Sir Trevor Brooking has claimed that his past feud with Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp played no part in the governing body's decision to snub the 65-year-old when considering the new England boss.

It is believed that Brooking and Redknapp have not seen eye to eye since the Spurs coach succeeded Billy Bonds at West Ham United in 1994 after the duo fell out while at the club.

Despite his personal feelings towards the former Portsmouth boss, Brooking has insisted that Roy Hodgson was appointed becuase he was the right candidate for the job.

"To be honest, we discussed a lot of candidates - none of them I had a problem with," the Express quotes Brooking as saying. "It's a non-starter. That [relationship with Redknapp] didn't come into the decision making at all."

Meanwhile, current England manager Hodgson is due to start his full-time role with the national side after West Bromwich Albion's final Premier League game next weekend.
