Steven Pienaar admits that not being able to break into the Tottenham Hotspur starting lineup is leaving him feeling depressed.

South African midfielder Steven Pienaar has admitted that not being able to force his way into the Tottenham Hotspur starting lineup has left him feeling depressed.

Pienaar joined Spurs from Everton in January 2011 but has struggled to make many appearances after a series of injuries.

The 29-year-old is disappointed not to be in Harry Redknapp's immediate plans, but is determined to prove his worth at White Hart Lane.

"It's depressing. The team is playing well and getting results, which is satisfying," said Pienaar. "But if you're not playing you don't have a hand in helping the team and as a player you always want to be part of a team that's doing well.

"If you're not part of it, it's like getting your money without doing anything. But I will definitely get my chance. There are a lot of games this season and you just have to be patient.

"When your opportunity does come you have to prove yourself again and make sure you hold onto your place."

Pienaar has made one appearance for Spurs this season.
