Preview: Wigan Athletic vs. Watford

Sports Mole previews the Championship clash between high-flying Watford and relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

Watford will be hoping to keep themselves in the automatic promotion places when they travel to the DW Stadium to face Wigan Athletic on Tuesday.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side moved up to second in the table with a comfortable 4-1 win over Reading at the weekend, keeping them level on points with league leaders Bournemouth and third-placed Middlesbrough, who they are ahead of on goals scored.

The Hornets have picked up more points from their last six matches than any other side in the division, and have lost just once in their last nine outings.

Centre-back Tommy Hoban will be available again for this match, having missed the clash with Reading through suspension after picking up a red card in the 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month.

Almen Abdi, who opened the scoring in the win over the Royals, will miss the match with a hamstring injury, while Sean Murphy is ruled out with a knee problem, but the club reports that all other players will be available for the trip.

In-form striker Troy Deeney will surely continue up front, having scored at least once in each of the team's last five matches, while Matej Vydra has four from four.

Meanwhile, Wigan will be looking to close the gap between themselves and safety as they will be looking for their first win at the DW Stadium since August.

The Latics did pick up their fourth straight away win at the weekend though, with Jermaine Pennant netting a brace to hand the team a 2-1 win over Rotherham United, who sit just above them in the table.

Malky Mackay's side remain in the relegation zone, but are now just six points from safety with nine matches to play before the end of the season.

Newly-signed on-loan striker Jerome Sinclair could come into the side after joining Liverpool teammate Sheyi Ojo for a spell at the club.

James McClean misses out through suspension after picking up a booking at the weekend, but Leon Clarke is available again after sitting out against his parent club on Saturday.

When the sides met at Vicarage Park earlier in the season, Deeney scored twice to give Watford a 2-1 win.
