Preview: Wolfsburg vs. Augsburg - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Bundesliga fixture between Wolfsburg and Augsburg, including team news and predicted lineups.

Augsburg square off against Wolfsburg on Sunday afternoon looking to extend their winning streak in the Bundesliga to three matches.

Fresh off the back of their surprise exit from the Europa League, Wolfsburg head into this game looking to get their first league victory on the board after successive draws.

After Wolfsburg squeezed into the Europa League at the end of last season, boss Oliver Glasner would have been confident about his side qualifying for the group stages of the competition.

However, being eliminated on penalties in their final qualifying round fixture against AEK Athens has come as a huge blow to the German side, who must now reassess their plans.

Regardless of their net spend over the summer being reasonable enough, Wolfsburg likely budgeted for a campaign in Europe, and at least one major sale could now occur before the end of the window.

As well as the potential issues off the pitch, Glasner and his side are under pressure to get their first win of the season on the board after draws with Bayer Leverkusen and Freiburg.

They face opponents in Augsburg who have already caused a major upset this season in defeating Borussia Dortmund by a 2-0 scoreline.

After five successive finishes of between 12th and 15th, few expected Heiko Herrlich's side to overcome the title challengers with the added bonus of a clean sheet.

As one of just two clubs who still possess a 100% record in the Bundesliga after two matches, expectation levels have inevitably increased ahead of the trip to the Volkswagen Arena.

Felix Uduokhai's loan deal from Wolfsburg was turned into a permanent transfer earlier in the summer, and the former Germany Under-21 international netted his first league goal for Augsburg last week.

Team News

Having rested a number of players last weekend, Wolfsburg boss Glasner will likely restore each of his stars to the starting lineup.

That should see Renato Steffen, Xaver Schlager and Wout Weghorst all feature in the first XI.

From Augsburg's perspective, Alfred Finnbogason is pushing Florian Niederlechner for a place in the final third.

Former West Ham United youngster Reece Oxford will remain among the substitutes, despite playing the final 27 minutes against Dortmund.

Wolfsburg possible starting lineup:
Pervan; Otavio, Lacroix, Guilavogui, Klaus; Mehmedi, Steffen, Schlager, Arnold, Brekalo; Weghorst

Augsburg possible starting lineup:
Gikiewicz; Framberger, Uduokhai, Gouweleeuw, Iago; Caligiuri, Gruezo, Khedira, Hahn; Gregoritsch, Finnbogason

We say: Wolfsburg 1-1 Augsburg

Given the respective mindsets of the two sides, many will be tipping Augsburg to prevail in this encounter. However, this Wolfsburg team need to produce a positive reaction, and we feel that it will be enough to earn a share of the spoils.
