Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leicester City and Southampton all defeat EFL Cup opposition to reach the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

Julen Lopetegui gets off to a winning start as Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach as his side defeat Gillingham to reach the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

The former Sevilla boss has had to remain patient when it comes to taking charge of his first official match, the focus instead being partially placed on lining up new additions for January.

However, Wolves were able to deliver a 2-0 victory for Lopetegui, even if they had to wait until the 77th minute to break the deadlock against the League Two strugglers.

Raul Jimenez, making his first Wolves outing since August, converted from the penalty spot after Hwang Hee-chan had been hauled down inside the area.

As the game entered four minutes of added-on time, Rayan Ait-Nouri wrapped up the game for the Premier League outfit, finishing a well-worked team move with a composed finish into the corner.

Leicester City made easier work of their tie with MK Dons, breezing past their League One opponents as they picked up where they left off before the World Cup break.

Youri Tielemans put the Foxes into an 18th-minute lead, the Belgium international converting from close range after Jamie Vardy had previously had a shot well kept out.

The advantage was doubled through a brilliant goal from Ayoze Perez, who superbly controlled the ball before rifling a shot inside the near post.

Leicester sealed their place in the last eight at the beginning of the second half, Jamie Vardy glancing home a header after running to the near post to meet a Timothy Castagne cross.

Meanwhile, Southampton came from behind to register a 2-1 win over Lincoln City as Nathan Jones earned his first win in charge of the Saints.

The visitors went in front courtesy of an own goal from goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, the Republic of Ireland stopper punching the ball into his own net after getting in the way of a teammate.

However, a double from Che Adams ensured that the South-coast side were able to book their spot in the next round, his equaliser coming via a close-range header.

Like with the first goal, Mohamed Elyounoussi played a part in the second, the wide player's shot only being blocked into the path of Adams who again made no mistake from near the Lincoln goal.

In the other of Tuesday's ties, Newcastle United edged past Bournemouth by a 1-0 scoreline at St James' Park.
