Paul Wellens targeting further St Helens success

Paul Wellens says that the League Leaders' Shield triumph is "a great reward" for his St Helens squad following a gruelling campaign.

St Helens captain Paul Wellens has targeted further success in the playoffs after seeing his side pick up the League Leaders' Shield this weekend.

Castleford Tigers losing to against Catalan Dragons ensured that the Saints ended a six-year wait for silverware on Saturday.

Wellens, 36, is now looking to build on this success when the playoffs get underway next week.

"We are obviously delighted to secure the League Leaders' Shield despite winning it in unfamiliar circumstances," Wellens told the club's official website. "It's the first time I've won a trophy sitting in my living room.

"It's great reward for our group of players, a lot of whom haven't had the experience of winning a trophy and we hope it can be the catalyst for many more moving forward.

"We've now turned our attention to the playoffs and look forward to the challenges ahead whilst knowing we can rely on our fans to get behind us on the way."

Wellens has been at St Helens since 1998.
