Chris Robshaw admits that he made the wrong decision in opting not to drive into the corner in the final few minutes against South Africa.

England captain Chris Robshaw has admitted that he deserves to shoulder the blame for the bizaare climax to yesterday's defeat to South Africa at Twickenham.

Trailing by four points with three minutes to play, Robshaw opted to kick at goal rather than drive into the corner when the referee awarded England a penalty.

Owen Farrell slotted the penalty but England failed to collect the restart and slipped to a disappointing 15-16 defeat to the Springboks.

Robshaw declared that he made the wrong call at a crucial period but insisted that his logic was correct.

He told BBC Sport: "There were a couple of minutes on the clock and we thought we had enough time to get down there again and potentially get ourselves in drop-goal range.

"Unfortunately it was probably the wrong call but you have to judge every game as it comes and get a feel for it. That falls on my head. At the end of the day, I have to make those decisions.

"We were playing well, putting them under pressure, they were giving a lot of penalties away, but it probably wasn't right. Unfortunately it just wasn't to be."

England have now lost back-to-back Tests against southern hemisphere opposition this Autumn and finish 2012 with a daunting match against New Zealand next weekend.
