Roberto Di Matteo: "I have no regrets"

Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo defends his team selection after a 4-1 loss at Anfield ended the Blues' hopes of a top-four finish.

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has defended his team selection following the Blues' 4-1 defeat to Liverpool.

The Italian made eight chances from the side that had overcome the Merseysiders at Wembley three days earlier.

The result was Chelsea's heaviest competitive defeat since November 2010 and it also ended their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League through their Premier League position.

"We've come so far because we've used the energy and players we have in the squad. That is the only way to be in the race until now. I have no regrets," Di Matteo told BBC Sport.

"We've had very intense games and to get yourself up for all those has been a big demand. I thought tonight fresh legs would give us a better chance.

"We've got a game on Sunday [against Blackburn Rovers] and we want to finish our last game well to go into the Champions League final in a positive mood."

Sixth-placed Chelsea must now beat Bayern Munich on May 19 in order to compete alongside Europe's elite next season.
