Maurizio Sarri resigns as Empoli manager

Empoli confirm that manager Maurizio Sarri has resigned after three seasons with the Serie A club.

Empoli have confirmed that Maurizio Sarri has resigned from his position as manager of the club.

The 56-year-old guided the club to Serie A promotion last season and helped them to a 15th-place finish in the league table, which helped them to stay in the top flight.

However, he has now decided to leave the Azzurri, despite having two years left on his current contract.

"After the meeting today, Empoli FC acknowledged the will of Maurizio Sarri not to continue the relationship which would have tied him to the club for another two years," read a statement on the club's official website.

"Empoli has therefore decided to accept the resignation of the coach. We extend our deserved thanks to Maurizio Sarri for three years full of exciting achievements."

Empoli finished their season with a 4-3 defeat at Inter Milan on Sunday evening.
