New York Red Bulls into fifth place with New England Revolution win

New York Red Bulls cruise past New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium.

The New York Red Bulls' push for a place in the MLS playoffs has been boosted by a crucial away win against Eastern Conference pacesetters New England Revolution.

The visitors edged in front after 18 minutes when Lloyd Sam found Eric Alexander and his effort proved too much for keeper Bobby Shuttleworth.

New England were almost back on terms early in the second half when Andrew Farrell was put through on goal, but Joel Robles was able to thwart the hosts' attack.

Robles was again called into action on 68 minutes when he was forced to dive low to his left to keep out Kelyn Rowe's strike.

However, the result was put beyond doubt when Peguy Luyindula netted for the Red Bulls with 14 minutes remaining.

Their victory means that New York climb to fifth in the Eastern Conference, while the Revolution retain top spot in the table.
