Paul McCallum: 'Hearts move provides a challenge'

West Ham United striker Paul McCallum insists that his loan at Scottish Premiership side Hearts will provide the opportunity to 'challenge himself'.

Paul McCallum has insisted that his move to Hearts provides the opportunity to 'challenge himself'.

The West Ham United striker has joined the Scottish Premiership's bottom side on loan, following spells at a string of clubs in England.

"I was like 'wow, that's a bit far', but I'd already done League Two and Hearts was an opportunity to come somewhere new and challenge myself," the 20-year-old is quoted as saying by STV Sport. "I'd never been to Scotland before. In fact I'd never been past Accrington Stanley. So it's a new experience for me.

"I didn't know much about Hearts either and the first thing I did was look up the table. I saw they had two points from 25 games. I had no idea about them being in administration but whacked it into Google and saw what had happened. But that didn't put me off.

"I saw it as a good opportunity for me to go and play with some young players who are hungry and I jumped at the chance. I've had a couple of loan spells in League Two which were successful with my goal ratio. Now I've come up here to Scotland I hope to improve that."

McCallum has yet to make an appearance for West Ham.
