Veteran Roberto Bautista Agut and Casper Ruud battle in the Swiss Indoors first round on Wednesday, with both players keen to prove a point.
The 36-year-old enters the event in Basel after his recent title triumph in Antwerp and aims to stun his Norwegian opponent seeking a spot at the year-end ATP Finals in Turin.

Fresh off his 12th ATP Tour success and first in two years, Bautista Agut hopes to continue his momentum in Switzerland to Ruud's disadvantage.
The Spaniard dropped one set en route to last week's victory in Belgium and will be confident in his prospects in Basel, having defeated one opponent in the top 40 — Tomas Martin Etcheverry — a top-20 player in Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter-final and world No. 28 Jiri Lehecka in the final.
The veteran player's only dropped set came in his tight comeback triumph over Auger-Aliassime, further highlighting the 36-year-old's impressive week, which saw him return to the top 50 after a year.
Bautista Agut must refocus to avoid a tournament-opening loss against a top-10 player in Ruud, as he aims to prevent another first-round loss in Basel after last year's early elimination.
Hoping to improve on 2023's disappointing performance, having made the semis a year before, the Spanish player will be looking to carry his winning form from Antwerp into his match against the world No. 8.

The Norwegian has a lot riding on events this week in Switzerland as the race to secure a place in the ATP Finals intensifies.
Although Ruud is in the top eight, he faces fierce competition from a small group of players, including Grigor Dimitrov, Alex de Minaur, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Tommy Paul to guarantee participation.
However, the 12-time Tour-level champion's form entering the Basel event could dim his prospects, highlighted by just one victory in his past five matches.
Deep runs in recent tournaments have been non-existent for the world No. 8, who exited early in Tokyo, Shanghai and Stockholm, albeit following a tournament-opening success in the latter.
The loss of form and confidence in Ruud pales in comparison to Wednesday's opponent, who could dent the Norwegian's ambition to make it to Turin after missing out last year.
Head To Head
Masters 1000 Canada (2022) - Round of 16: Ruud 6-7(4) 7-6(4) 6-4
ATP Cup (2022) - Round Robin: Bautista Agut 6-4 7-6(4)
Munich (2018) - Round of 16: Bautista Agut 6-4 6-3
Even though Wednesday's match will be the first since 2022, Bautista Agut notably leads his head-to-head with Ruud 2-1.
The Spaniard overcame the 25-year-old in their first match-up on the ATP Tour in 2018 before another straight-set win four years later.
The Norwegian halved that disadvantage in the Masters event in Canada that same year and now aims for consecutive victories over the experienced competitor.
Bautista Agut is seeking his 21st victory over a top-10 player on Wednesday and a first since defeating Daniil Medvedev in Halle last year.
We say: Ruud to win in two sets
Although Bautista Agut is in high spirits following his recent success in Antwerp, Ruud's ambition to compete in next month's ATP Finals leaves him with little margin for error. Thus, the world No. 8 is backed for a triumph in two sets at the Spaniard's expense.
