Ray Parlour doubts Arsene Wenger's Champions League ability

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour doubts Arsene Wenger's ability to win the Champions League with the Gunners.

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has admitted his doubts about Arsene Wenger's ability to lead the Gunners to the Champions League.

Wenger celebrated his 18th year in charge on Wednesday afternoon, and the closest the Frenchman has come to lifting Europe's premier trophy was their 2006 defeat to Barcelona in the final.

Parlour, who played under Wenger from 1996 to 2004, thinks that his former boss may never win the competition with his current tactical approach.

He told talkSPORT: "To be honest I don't think Arsenal are good enough to challenge the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona or maybe Bayern Munich. That's what levels they've got to get to.

"If you look at Jose Mourinho he can set up teams and make them really hard to beat and they can always nick a goal on the break. Maybe Arsene Wenger hasn't got that style, maybe he hasn't got that plan B. I don't think he's going to change now which might be a problem.

"It might mean they will never ever win the Champions League. It's a situation where that could be the stumbling block, but he's one of those managers who looks at team and tries to get them playing like his Arsenal teams from the past."
