Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger surprised by Chelsea's Pedro deal

Arsene Wenger concedes that he was surprised to see Chelsea win the race to sign Pedro.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted that he was surprised to see Spain forward Pedro join Chelsea this week.

The 28-year-old swapped Barcelona for the Blues in a £21.4m deal that reportedly blindsided Manchester United and Manchester City, who were vying for his signature.

"It was a surprise to me because I thought he was landing at Manchester but he finally landed in London," Wenger told Arsenal's official website.

"The story was out for such a long time that I thought he was going to go to Manchester, but then suddenly in 24 hours [he joined Chelsea].

"We've seen that before on the transfer market. I don't know what happened exactly."

Pedro had also been linked with Arsenal, but Wenger says that the Catalans never offered the winger to him.

The Frenchman added: "No. We have many players on the flanks. Many, many players."

The West Londoners refused to disclose the length of Pedro's contract, but speculation has mounted that it is a five-year deal.
