Alan Smith believes that Arsenal could be preparing for life without Robin van Persie after buying Lukas Podolski and reportedly closing in on Olivier Giroud.

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith believes that the Gunners' new signings could be due to the impending departure of star striker Robin van Persie.

The 28-year-old has been coy about his future in recent months, with some reports claiming that an exit from the Emirates could be on the cards.

With the acquisition of Lukas Podolski and rumours that French forward Olivier Giroud could be on his way to North London, Smith believes that Van Persie has made a decision on his next destination.

"Arsene Wenger's already brought in Lukas Podolski and he's looking at Olivier Giroud," Smith told talkSPORT. "Maybe he's planning for life without Robin van Persie?

"I'd be surprised to see Robin van Persie join another English club. He's a Gunner through and through. It's all about ambition with Robin. If he does leave then it sends out a really bad message that Arsenal can't keep hold of their best players."

Van Persie is expected to make a final decision on his future after spending time with his family on holiday.
