Preview: Carlisle United vs. Charlton Athletic - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's League One clash between Carlisle United and Charlton Athletic, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Entering a new era under American ownership, Carlisle United will be aiming to throw a punch in the fight for League One survival as they welcome Charlton Athletic to Brunton Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues have struggled to adapt to life in the third tier, although recent developments off the field have reinvigorated supporters, while the Addicks are enjoying a decent run of form.

After registering their interest in a takeover of the club in February, Castle Sports group - run by Tom Piatak and his family - have completed the acquisition of 90% of Carlisle United's shares, with the Cumbrian team looking towards future success in the upper echelons of the third tier.

The Blues' new Florida-based ownership will be in attendance at Brunton Park on Saturday afternoon as Charlton come to town, with United currently sitting 22nd in the League One standings after collecting 14 points from 17 matches, with 20th-placed Exeter City three points ahead.

Having lost four of their last five third-tier matches, last week's 2-0 victory over League Two Harrogate Town in the EFL Trophy would have been a welcome distraction from the rigours of league action, with Jordan Gibson bagging a brace for the hosts thanks to goals either side of the half-time interval.

Former Sligo Rovers man Gibson has netted seven goals in all competitions so far this season, and considering the 25-year-old managed just 11 goals in his first two campaigns at Brunton Park, the winger is really beginning to find his feet in England's Football League.

Paul Simpson's men ended their nine-year stay in League Two after beating Stockport County in the playoff final at Wembley in May, and the Blues have unsurprisingly struggled to make the step-up, winning just three of their opening 17 contests, with only Cheltenham Town managing fewer maximums.

While some clubs in the division enjoyed a two-week break due to international call-ups, Charlton have carried on through the middle of November with back-to-back cup successes against Cray Valley Paper Mills and Sutton United in the FA Cup and EFL Trophy respectively.

Tuesday night saw the Addicks welcome fourth-tier strugglers Sutton to the Valley for the closing Group B clash, with strikes from Corey Blackett-Taylor, Conor McGrandles and League One's leading goalscorer Alfie May handing the hosts a comfortable win in South London.

Having netted 27 league goals in the calendar year of 2023, only Manchester City's Erling Haaland has more goals than former Cheltenham striker May in England's top four divisions, and the 30-year-old has set his sights on leapfrogging the Norwegian before the New Year.

The Addicks' form away from the Valley so far this campaign is a huge factor in why they are currently five points behind sixth-placed Barnsley in the League One standings, with Michael Appleton's men winning just one of their seven league outings, beating strugglers Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium on Halloween.

Supporters at Brunton Park on Saturday afternoon will witness the first competitive meeting between Carlisle and Charlton since a League One clash in April 2012, when Bradley Wright-Phillips netted the only goal of the contest in the 76th minute to win the match for the Addicks.

Team News

Carlisle announced their first signing of the Piatak era earlier this week, with free agent Josh Emmanuel joining the Brunton Park club on a contract until the end of the season.

The arrival of the ex-Grimsby Town defender will be especially welcome considering the recent injuries suffered by right-sided players Fin Back and Jack Ellis.

Blues boss Simpson has revealed that the club are still in the market for free agent additions, although many of their targets are not willing to drop down lower than the Championship, but that was not an issue for Crystal Palace loanee Luke Plange.

With leading marksman May playing a deeper role in the Charlton attack, 19-year-old Miles Leaburn has been leading the line for the Addicks and should do the same on Saturday.

Former Birmingham City striker Chuks Aneke is currently sidelined due to injury, but this weekend's visitors have not decided to recall Daniel Kanu from his loan spell at Southend United.

Appleton is expected to field a similar XI to the one which earned a very respectable points at league leaders Portsmouth before the international break, meaning Michael Hector and Lloyd Jones will start in defence.

Carlisle United possible starting lineup:
Holy; Barclay, Huntington, Lavelle; Armer, Moxon, McGeouch, Mellish; Gibson, Garner, Plange

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Maynard-Brewer; Watson, Hector, Jones, Edun; Dobson, Watson, Campbell, Blackett-Taylor, May; Leaburn

We say: Carlisle United 1-2 Charlton Athletic

With the Piatak family casting their eyes over the team for the first time as owners, Carlisle will be desperate to earn a victory at Brunton Park this weekend.

Charlton have got back on track after back-to-back defeats to Lincoln and Bolton Wanderers in October, and we are expecting the Addicks to win in Cumbria on Saturday.
