Roberto Di Matteo insists that John Terry has learned from his mistakes and will captain Chelsea against Shakhtar Donetsk if he is selected in the team.

Roberto Di Matteo has revealed that John Terry will captain Chelsea against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday if he plays.

The 31-year-old defender is currently serving a four-match domestic ban imposed by the FA for racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand last season.

"If he is playing, he will be captain," the Blues manager is quoted as saying by the the Daily Mail.

Di Matteo added that Terry has learned from his mistakes and remains the "leader" of Chelsea.

"I think he has realised that he used language that was inappropriate and has apologised for that and has certainly learned from that," he said.

"With good performances and good behaviour he should still be looked upon as the leader for our club.

"I've never been concerned about picking him. He's been able to focus on the games."

Chelsea are currently at the top of Group E with four points from two matches.
