Preview: Hibernian vs. St Mirren - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Scottish Premiership clash between Hibernian and St Mirren, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Hibernian host St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night hoping to bounce back from last weekend's disappointing 1-1 draw with Dundee United.

Meanwhile, the Saints came out on top against St Johnstone last Saturday to secure their second 3-2 victory in as many matches.

A late stoppage-time equaliser from Dundee United's Luke Bolton earned the visitors an unlikely point against a dominant Hibernian side last weekend.

Manager Jack Ross was furious with his players for conceding so late in a game that he believed his side fully deserved to win.

That result ended a string of three successive victories but does extend their unbeaten run to eight matches in all competitions.

Hibs are also unbeaten in their last eight meetings with St Mirren, including the 3-0 away victory in September this season.

Ross's men could overtake Celtic and move into second place if the Hoops were to lose at home to Ross County for the second time this season.

St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin has had plenty to smile about in recent weeks as his side's impressive run of form has propelled the Saints off the bottom of the league table and through to the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup.

Late strikes from Lee Erwin and Jonathan Obika helped St Mirren come from behind against St Johnstone to secure their third league win in four matches and move up to eighth in the table.

The Saints are now unbeaten in their last five Scottish Premiership matches and Goodwin hopes that their positive momentum can continue.

St Mirren have however struggled against Hibernian in recent seasons, losing four of their previous five meetings. The last three points they secured against them was in the Scottish Championship in the 2016-17 campaign.

Another victory in midweek could move the Saints level on points with fifth-placed Motherwell if they were to lose to Aberdeen.

Team News

Midfielder Scott Allan re-joined first-team training last week, but Hibs refuse to put a timescale on his return to action.

Winger Jamie Murphy will not be available this weekend as he is nursing a hamstring injury.

Drey Wright, who came on as a second-half substitute against Dundee United, could start and replace Kyle Magennis on the left flank.

St Mirren duo Richard Tait and Conor McCarthy are both one booking away from suspension, so manager Jim Goodwin may have to prepare for rotation if they see yellow in the coming weeks.

The Saints currently have no injury concerns and could start with the same lineup that beat St Johnstone last weekend.

Hibernian possible starting lineup:
Marciano; McGinn, Porteous, Hanlon, Stevenson; Boyle, Hallberg, Newell, Wright; Nisbet, Doidge

St Mirren possible starting lineup:
Alnwick; Fraser, McCarthy, Shaughnessy, Tait; Connelly, Erhanon, McGrath, MacPherson, Durmus; Erwin

We say: Hibernian 2-1 St Mirren

Both teams have strung together impressive runs of form but at least one of these sides is to drop points on Wednesday. Despite Hibernian winning only two of their eight home matches this season, we expect Jack Ross's side to edge out St Mirren in what could be a tight contest at Easter Road.
