Preview: Huddersfield Town vs. Plymouth Argyle - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's FA Cup clash between Huddersfield Town and Plymouth Argyle, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Huddersfield Town play host to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup third round on the back of losing two of their last three fixtures in the Championship.

Meanwhile, League One outfit Plymouth make the trip to the John Smith's Stadium courtesy of impressive victories over Charlton Athletic and Lincoln City.

Match preview

Huddersfield's lack of consistency over the first part of the season has left Carlos Corberan and his squad under pressure to improve over the coming months.

Nevertheless, the Spaniard will be content with being able to head into the contest with the club sitting in 13th spot in the Championship, much higher than many anticipated after their slow start to the campaign.

That placing has been achieved despite prevailing in just two of their last six fixtures, highlighting that it would not have taken much for the Terriers to be in closer proximity to the playoff places.

Sitting just six points behind Watford, the Yorkshire outfit will still have ambitions to make quick headway up the table, but this game represents a chance for Corberan to take another look at some of the squad's fringe players.

However, having witnessed his side lose out to Rochdale in the EFL Cup earlier this season, Corberan is aware of the threat offered by clubs further down the pyramid.

That feeling will certainly remain ahead of a fixture with Plymouth, who have already prevailed against the odds in their previous ties.

Argyle have won just six of their 15 outings since the start of November, two of which have been against League One title challengers Charlton and Lincoln in this competition.

Although Ryan Lowe will be happy to be the underdogs ahead of the trip to Yorkshire, his squad will fancy their chances of progressing into the fourth round.

That said, Plymouth have gone five matches without recording an away win, a run which has been spread over two months.

Team News

Huddersfield Town's Alex Pritchard celebrates scoring their first goal against Southampton on May 12, 2019© Reuters

Alex Pritchard is likely to return to the Huddersfield XI in one of several changes made by Corberan.

Alex Vallejo will almost certainly make his first start in midfield, while Ben Hamer, Demeaco Duhaney, Romoney Crichlow-Noble and new arrival Danny Grant may also be provided with opportunities.

Tyrese Fornah could return to the Plymouth midfield after replacing Lewis MacLeod in the first half of the win over Gillingham.

Barring any late fitness issues, the rest of the starting XI may remain the same.

Huddersfield Town possible starting lineup:
Hamer; Brown, Crichlow-Noble, Sarr, Duhaney; Hogg, Vallejo; Mbenza, Pritchard, O'Brien; Campbell

Plymouth Argyle possible starting lineup:
Cooper; Aimson, Canavan, Watts; Edwards, Camara, Fornah, Mayor, Grant; Jephcott, Hardie

We say: Huddersfield Town 2-1 Plymouth Argyle

The expected rotation from Corberan will throw up an opportunity for the visitors to cause another surprise in this competition. However, a Terriers second-string will be motivated to impress their manager, and we still expect the home side to edge their way past their next opponents.
