Lyon club president Jean-Michel Aulas has declared that he wants to enter talks with talisman midfielder Nabil Fekir over a new contract.

Lyon club president Jean-Michel Aulas has declared that he is open to negotiating a new contract with talismanic midfielder Nabil Fekir.

The Frenchman, who has spent seven seasons with the Ligue 1 side, was on the verge of completing a move to Liverpool last summer but the deal collapsed amid concerns over a medical.

Fekir, whose contract at Lyon expires next summer, remains intent on finding a new club, although Jurgen Klopp's side are unlikely to revive their interest during the current window.

Speaking on the subject of the 25-year-old's contract, Aulas told RMC Sport: "Nabil has entered the final year of his contract so there may be a temptation for [interested] clubs to let the situation drag on.

"We're strong enough economically to wait.

"It would be very good news if he doesn't find a club of a suitable size, since we would then enter negotiations [about a new contract]."

Fekir would be available as a free agent next year if he refuses to sign a new deal with Lyon and fails to secure a move elsewhere this summer.

Lyon have already lost two key members of their squad this summer, with Tanguy Ndombele and Ferland Mendy completing moves to Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid respectively.
