Dramatic James Milner brace sends Manchester City through to fourth round

Manchester City require a late James Milner goal to beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium and progress to round four of the FA Cup.

James Milner scored twice to help Manchester City come from behind to eventually see off Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 in the FA Cup this evening.

The Citizens found themselves a goal behind heading into the final 25 minutes, but the England international levelled things up before finding the net in the dying stages at the Etihad Stadium to send City through to round four.

The home side took control of the game in the early stages, although they struggled to create any real openings, with Stevan Jovetic's blocked shot the closest that they came to finding a breakthrough.

With 14 minutes played, Atdhe Nuhiu stunned City with a strike from the edge of the box which flew past Willy Cabellero, and that appeared to change the flow of the game as Wednesday began to see more of the ball.

It was the Premier League champions who managed to create all of the better openings for the remainder of the first half, though, as both Frank Lampard and Yaya Toure fired narrowly wide, while an unmarked Fernando could not direct his header goalwards.

City continued to press as the opening 45 minutes drew to a close, yet Wednesday issued a indication that they are not simply going to sit back for the remainder of the tie as Stevie May blasted away a 25-yard shot which was not too far away from Caballero's goal.

A lively opening to the second period saw Owls defender Claude Dielna take range from distance, although it was a straightforward catch for the City stopper between the sticks.

The Citizens were beginning to become frustrated as they strived to break down a resilient Wednesday side, but they eventually found a way through on the 64-minute mark through Milner.

Substitute David Silva played a big part in the goal, working a fine cross into the box for his teammate to drill home and equalise for City, who were finding things far tougher than when these sides met earlier this season in a thumping 7-0 victory for the hosts.

Milner almost doubled his personal tally for the afternoon shortly after when he latched onto Toure's teasing pass, only for the ball to be taken from his stride by a covering Wednesday defender.

Stuart Gray's charges looked to have done enough to earn themselves a replay before Milner popped up once more in added time to tap the ball home on the line and send his side through to the next round.
