Vincent Kompany: 'Manchester United fans will cheer for City in Champions League'

Vincent Kompany believes that Manchester City will have the backing of some Manchester United fans when they play Liverpool in the Champions League next month.

Vincent Kompany has claimed that Manchester City will have the backing of some Manchester United fans when they play Liverpool in the Champions League next month.

The pair have drawn each other in the quarter-finals of the competition, with the first leg taking place at Anfield on April 4 and the return encounter on April 10.

Man City captain Kompany believes that many United fans - whose side were knocked out of the competition by Sevilla - will get behind Pep Guardiola's charges for the crunch clash.

"It is the only thing people talk about in Manchester right now," Kompany told Sky Sports News from the Belgium camp ahead of next week's friendly against Saudi Arabia.

"The Champions League is obviously massive, somehow I feel like we do get a little bit of support from the United fans for that fixture.

"But other than that the game against United is the biggest thing to talk about but we still have to play Everton (on the weekend before the first Liverpool tie)."

Man City remain top of the Premier League table, 16 points clear of Jose Mourinho's side, and have already claimed the EFL Cup this term.
