Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley says that the Olympic Games have been on his mind since Christmas.

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley is hoping to make up for an injury-ravaged season by scooping gold at the Olympics.

Cleverley's season was curtailed by an ankle injury that he picked up against Bolton Wanderers just a month into the last Premier League season.

The midfielder then suffered a setback after returning to action, but said that he has known since Christmas that he had a chance of being included in the Olympic squad.

"Hopefully I will win many trophies with Manchester United but to have an Olympic gold on your mantelpiece is something to tell your grandkids about," The Sun quotes Cleverley as saying.

"I have known since Christmas that I might have a chance of the Olympics. I knew if I wasn't going to make the Euros I would love to be a part of this.

"It is something I have been thinking about for a long time and I am thrilled. This would help to make up for the disappointment of last season for me."

The 22-year-old has been selected as part of Stuart Pearce's 18-man squad for the summer Games in London which kick off against Senegal at Old Trafford on July 26.
