Patrice Evra will miss France's friendlies against the USA and Belgium following the death of one of his brothers.
The death occurred just before Manchester United's 6-1 derby defeat to Manchester City, but Evra has played on for the Red Devils.
He will take the international break off to spend time with his grieving family.
"He needs a rest," said France coach Laurent Blanc.
"He is affected by a family drama which will prevent him from being with us."
Evra's brother, 42, passed away from a heart attack.
