Ben Doak to replace Mohamed Salah? Liverpool loan star's Anfield future assessed

David Lynch assesses Ben Doak's future at Liverpool on November 19, 2024
    © Imago

A permanent exit from Liverpool for loanee Ben Doak is more likely than the youngster establishing himself as a regular under Arne Slot, Reds expert David Lynch has revealed.

The Scotsman performed brilliantly for his nation against Poland and Croatia in their outings this past week, with the winger tormenting Manchester City and Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol during their sides' clash last Friday.

Scotland would go on to win their match against Croatia 1-0 thanks to John McGinn's 86th-minute goal, but it was Doak that managed to capture headlines following his breathtaking performance.

The right-winger has also impressed during his loan spell at Middlesbrough so far this season, but Lynch believes that barring a major uptick in terms of direct goal contributions, Doak is likely to leave the Reds in the near future, telling Sports Mole: "It was my understanding there was an openness to selling him in the summer just gone. That was something that was on the table.

Manchester City expert Steven McInerney from Esteemed Kompany is hopeful that James McAtee stays at the club and can establish himself as a first-team player, but he would not be surprised if the youngster expressed a desire to seek pastures new.

After two successful years on loan at Sheffield United, McAtee has since been integrated into Pep Guardiola's senior squad this term, as Man City decided against sending the midfielder out on loan for a third straight season.

However, at a time when Guardiola has been working with a depleted squad due to the club's injury crisis, McAtee has struggled for regular first-team football this season, making just six senior appearances in all competitions.

McAtee has been reduced to just three starts - two in the EFL Cup and one in the Community Shield - while he has featured for less than 60 minutes across three substitute outings in the Premier League and Champions League.

Manchester City expert Steven McInerney from Esteemed Kompany believes that it would be "important symbolically for life beyond Pep Guardiola" if Erling Haaland was to sign a contract extension at the Etihad Stadium.

Haaland has been labelled as the "best striker in the world" by McInerney and the striker's time at Man City has been nothing short of prolific, having scored 105 goals in 114 games across all competitions since joining in 2022.

The two-time Premier League Golden Boot winner is already leading the way at the top of the scoring charts this season with 12 goals in just 11 top-flight matches, while he has also scored three times in four Champions League fixtures this term.

Haaland is believed to be content at Man City, but speculation over a possible big-money move to La Liga has been mooted for some time amid reported interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona.
