Alan Pardew: 'We deserved to win'

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew feels that his side deserved at least a share of the spoils against Sunderland.

Alan Pardew has insisted that his Newcastle United side were the "better team" during this afternoon's Tyne-Wear derby.

Nevertheless, it was hosts Sunderland that claimed all three points thanks to a strike from substitute Fabio Borini five minutes from time, which sealed a 2-1 victory at the Stadium of Light.

"I thought we were the better team. We just switched off and [Borini] has hit it true. We are really disappointed and I'm just disappointed for everybody at Newcastle," he told BBC Sport

"We will have to bounce back and be strong. This is always a high profile game and we have lost it."

Sunderland had only previously beaten the Magpies once at home in over three decades.
