Sporting Kansas City have missed the chance to return to the top of the Eastern Conference after slumping to a shock home defeat to Chicago Fire.
Marco Pappa scored the game's only goal on 58 minutes, finishing off a swift counter-attack with a low sweeping shot after a neat pass from Chris Rolfe.
The goal came against the run of play as Kansas had dominated the game for sustained periods.
Peter Vermes's men enjoyed 61% of ball possession and created numerous chances, but their strikers - especially Teal Bunbury, who was off target with all five of his shots - were extremely wasteful in front of goal.
Kansas remain one point behind league-leaders DC United in second, while Chicago are two places and two points further back.
