Tottenham Hotspur's James Maddison is allegedly cut from the England squad for this summer's European Championship.

Tottenham Hotspur attacker James Maddison has allegedly been cut from the England squad for this summer's European Championship, with the 27-year-old already leaving the camp.

Maddison, as expected, was included in Gareth Southgate's preliminary squad selection, and he was involved in Monday's international friendly with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The Spurs playmaker featured as a second-half substitute against Bosnia, taking the place of Cole Palmer, and he had also been expected to be involved in Friday's clash with Iceland.

However, according to The Athletic, Maddison has now left the Three Lions camp, having been informed by Southgate that he would not be a part of the squad for the European Championship.

The attacker has been capped on seven occasions by England, while he made 30 appearances for Tottenham last season following a move from Leicester City, scoring four times and registering nine assists.

Maddison 'not included in England squad for Euro 2024'

Southgate needs to trim his squad to 26 before the June 7 deadline, and it remains to be seen whether there are any other surprise names removed from the selection.

Maddison missed a chunk of action last season due to an ankle problem, but he was a key player for Spurs when fit and available, coming up with four goals and nine assists in the Premier League.

According to Sky Sports News, Southgate now views both Palmer and Eberechi Eze above Maddison in the pecking order, leading to the decision being made.

There is not an obvious spot in the XI for Maddison, as Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden are certain to start, while Declan Rice and Harry Kane will also take up two more positions in the midfield and attack.

Who will England face at Euro 2024?

England will open their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on June 16, before also tackling Denmark and Slovenia in the group stage of the competition.

The Three Lions are the undoubted favourites to top Group C, but each match will come with difficulties, and there is pressure on Southgate's side to perform this summer.

Indeed, England are regarded as the favourites to win Euro 2024 alongside France, with Portugal and Germany also being tipped to challenge for the crown.

The Three Lions beat Bosnia 3-0 last time out and are now preparing for their final warm-up fixture with Iceland.

Southgate has more big decisions to make when it comes to his final squad, and there could perhaps be one more big surprise when the European Championship selection is confirmed.
