Argentina to talk to Mauricio Pochettino, Diego Simeone over managerial post

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino and Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone are both reportedly on the shortlist to replace Gerardo Martino as Argentina coach.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino and Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone are both reportedly on the shortlist to take over as Argentina's national team coach.

Previous manager Gerardo Martino resigned from the role earlier this month having seen his side fall to a Copa America final defeat at the hands of Chile for the second successive year.

AFA chief Armando Perez is now planning to fly to Spain to undergo talks with Simeone and Sevilla boss Jorge Sampaoli, both of whom have previously expressed their desire to manage the national team.

La Nacion goes on to report that Perez will also speak to Pochettino while in Europe and plans to sound the Spurs boss out regarding his potential availability.

Pochettino is contracted to Tottenham until 2022 and led them to an unexpected title challenge last season before eventually finishing third in the table.

Perez is also planning to speak to Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, who retired from international football following their Copa America defeat, in an attempt to reverse the 29-year-old's decision.
