The Premier League confirms that Son Heung-min received a red card in Tottenham Hotspur's game with Everton for 'endangering the safety' of midfielder Andre Gomes.

The Premier League has confirmed that Son Heung-min received a red card in Tottenham Hotspur's game with Everton for 'endangering the safety' of midfielder Andre Gomes.

The Portuguese player was stretchered off the field and taken to hospital after suffering a serious leg injury in the second half of Sunday's Premier League fixture.

Gomes collided with Serge Aurier after being tackled by Son, and while referee Martin Atkinson initially gave the South Korean a yellow card, he upgraded it to a red when he saw the severity of the player's injury.

In an official statement, the Premier League said: "The red card for Son was for endangering the safety of a player which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge."

Following the incident, the former Bayer Leverkusen attacker was clearly visibly distressed by the state Gomes was in and he left the field in tears.

It is not yet clear whether Tottenham will appeal the decision, which was not sent to VAR for a check during the game at Goodison Park.
