Preview: Wolfsburg vs. Augsburg - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Bundesliga clash between Wolfsburg and Augsburg, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Wolfsburg will be looking to make it three successive wins under their new manager when they welcome Augsburg to the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday.

The hosts put an end to an eight-match winless run with victories over the past week, whilst the visitors picked up a vital win of their own last weekend in their fight against relegation from the Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg's run of eight games without a win across all competitions saw Mark van Bommel's short tenure in charge cut short prior to last weekend's Bundesliga fixture against Bayer Leverkusen.

The swift appointment of Florian Kohfeldt was made and the required new manager 'bounce' has been well and truly achieved at the Wolves.

Under Van Bommel, Wolfsburg achieved results early on despite disappointing performances, but this quickly caught up with them and led to his sacking.

Much of the problems under the Dutchman revolved around their lack of threat and creativity in attacking transitions, but Kohfeldt quickly corrected this during their trip to Leverkusen.

Lukas Nmecha and Maximilian Arnold netted a quickfire double shortly after half time, to give Wolfsburg an impressive 2-0 victory against their high-flying opponents, although the excellent performance was just as important for Kohfeldt.

Wolfsburg were finally possessing a threat going forward and were it not for some clinical finishing, they could have netted more on the day.

This weekend's hosts made it back-to-back victories for the new boss when they narrowly saw off Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League in midweek, with Ridle Baku and Nmecha scoring in a vital 2-1 win.

The performance was not quite there this time, but it was a positive result to carry into Saturday's fixture nonetheless.

Meanwhile, after a troubled start to the campaign, Augsburg finally burst into life against Stuttgart last weekend.

Winning just one and scoring only five goals in their opening nine league fixtures heading into the encounter, Fuggerstadter recorded a 4-1 comeback win in front of their own supporters.

The returning duo of Alfred Finnbogason and Florian Niederlechner, who netted a goal each, displayed to all what boss Markus Weinzierl had been missing in the absence of his first-choice forward pair.

Weinzierl will hope that the injury problems for the duo are now behind them, as they look to climb away from the relegation places altogether with another positive result on Saturday.

Last weekend's victory was Augsburg's first in five games in all competitions, which resulted in them opening up a gap of four points between themselves and Arminia Bielefeld in the automatic relegation spot.

With a daunting visit of Bayern Munich awaiting after the international break, Weinzierl will be eager to pick up at least a point in order to head into the break on a high.

Team News

Maxence Lacroix's stoppage-time red card in Leverkusen last weekend means he will miss this one through suspension, with Sebastiaan Bornauw set to deputise in the three-man defence.

Wout Weghorst returned from a short absence by starting in the Champions League win in midweek, and he should lead the line again alongside Yannick Gerhardt and Nmecha once more.

Bartosz Bialek, Xaver Schlager, William and Admir Mehmedi are long-term absentees due to various injuries, with Luca Waldschmidt also joining them on the sidelines recently.

As for the visitors, full-back Iago remains a doubt due to a hand injury, as well as Noah Sarenren Bazee.

Felix Uduokhai is the only definite absentee, with his long-term hamstring injury keeping him out since August.

After coming off the bench last weekend, Niederlechner looks set to start alongside Finnbogason in attack for the first time this season.

Wolfsburg possible starting lineup:
Casteels; Bornauw, Guilavogui, Brooks; Baku, Vrancx, Arnold, Otavio; L Nmecha, Weghorst, Gerhardt

Augsburg possible starting lineup:
Gikiewicz; Gumny, Gouweleeuw, Oxford, Pedersen; Caligiuri, Maier, Dorsch, Vargas; Niederlechner, Finnbogason

We say: Wolfsburg 2-1 Augsburg

Wolfsburg appear revitalised under their new manager and as a result, we expect them to record a third successive win under him against Augsburg on Saturday.

The visitors are likely to put in a good performance after the recent return of their important forward pair and their big win last weekend, but the hosts should possess the quality to see them off in front of their own supporters.
