Courtney Lawes cited for 'knee strike'

England's Courtney Lawes is cited for a 'knee strike' on Argentina's Mario Ledesma.

England lock Courtney Lawes has been cited for allegedly striking Argentina hooker Mario Ledesma with his knee.

The incident occurred in the first half of England’s 13-9 victory over The Pumas and it was deemed to be in breach of law 10.4(a) by Match Disciplinary Commissioner Murray Whyte.

The 22-year-old now faces a disciplinary hearing in Auckland chaired by independent judicial officer Terry Willis of Australia.

"Courtney Lawes (England) has been cited for an alleged breach of Law 10.4(a) punching or striking (with the knee) during the Rugby World Cup 2011 Pool B match against Argentina on September 10," read a statement from Rugby World Cup Ltd.

Sanctions for such an offence can range from three weeks to a few months, but punishments are usually issued in terms of matches at World Cups.

"We have received notification of Courtney's citing," England coach Martin Johnson said.

"We will of course provide Rugby World Cup with any information required and attend the hearing as requested. There will be no further comment until after the hearing."

England next face Georgia on Sunday, September 18.
