Ivan Lendl says that Andy Murray's triumph at the US Open will have little effect on his opponents in the Australian Open.

Ivan Lendl has said that Andy Murray's US Open victory will count for nothing when he kicks off his challenge at the Australian Open.

The Scot won his first Grand Slam in New York in September, ending a wait of 76 years for a British champion.

When asked about the effect that victory will have on his opponents, Lendl replied: "I think it's overrated. It may be worth a point here or there with lesser players, but I promise you it makes no difference with the top guys.

"That's what it was like for me. It won't help you much with the top guys.

"They are very experienced. When you win the first one you know how it feels in certain situations, what it takes, so you have gained that experience. But they have more of it. Roger and Novak have more of those experiences than Andy does at this stage."

Murray gets his campaign in Melbourne underway against Dutchman Robin Haase.
