Andy Murray continues hunt for ATP Finals spot with first-round win in Valencia

Andy Murray continues the hunt for an ATP World Tour Finals spot by beating Jurgen Melzer in the first round of the Valencia Open.

Andy Murray has continued his charge towards London's ATP World Tour Finals by beating Jurgen Melzer 6-3 6-3 in the Valencia Open.

The Scotsman, who is currently in the eighth and final spot for the end-of-season tournament next month, has reached the second round in Valencia in less than relaxing fashion.

Murray lost his serve immediately after winning the first break point of the match in Spain, but he later broke Melzer's serve twice in the first set to take the lead.

The Austrian tried to launch a comeback by breaking Murray's opening service game of the second set, but the British number one instantly broke back.

Murray lost his serve once again as the set continued, but a double break was enough to clinch the set and progress into the next round.
