Dave Sexton passes away

Former Chelsea and England Under-21 manager Dave Sexton dies aged 82.

Dave Sexton, former Chelsea and England Under-21 manager, has passed away aged 82.

After starting his managerial career at Leyton Orient, Sexton led Chelsea to the 1970 FA Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup in 1971, before then enjoying spells at Queens Park Rangers, Manchester United, England U-21s and Coventry City.

"It is a sad day for English football," said Trevor Brooking, the FA's football development director.

"Anyone who was ever coached by Dave would be able to tell you what a good man he was, but not only that, what a great coach in particular he was.

"In the last 30-40 years Dave's name was up there with any of the top coaches we have produced in England - the likes of Terry Venables, Don Howe and Ron Greenwood. His coaching was revered."

Sexton was recognised for his services to football with an OBE in 2005.
