Phil Jagielka: 'England are aiming to win Euro 2016'

Phil Jagielka says that England will go to Euro 2016 in France with the intention of winning the competition.

England defender Phil Jagielka believes that the Three Lions should go to Euro 2016 with the intention of winning the tournament.

Roy Hodgson's side will take a step closer to next summer's finals in France if they beat Lithuania when the sides meet in qualifying on Friday night, having already opened up a six-point lead at the top of Group E.

Having failed to get beyond the group stage at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Jagielka says that England need to put in an improved showing at the Euros for their supporters.

"We would love to make a proud nation even prouder and that is all we can do now in qualifying for France, and then performing well in France," the Everton man told The Telegraph.

"We've dropped down the rankings [to 17th]. It is something we discuss. We want to play well, win games and get as far as we can. Is the quarter-finals good enough? We will be looking, and should be looking, to go and win the tournament."

England follow up the Lithuania game with a friendly against Italy on Tuesday.
