Southgate: 'England as good as anyone'

Gareth Southgate believes that England's performance against Tunisia in their opening World Cup game was as good as anything produced by any other side so far at the tournament.

Gareth Southgate has claimed that England's performance against Tunisia in their opening World Cup game was as good as anything produced by any other side so far at the tournament.

The Three Lions ran out 2-1 winners in Volgograd thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Harry Kane, who had also scored earlier in the encounter.

Russia 2018 has delivered a number of shocks so far among the big guns, with Argentina claiming just one point from their first two games and reigning champions Germany losing 1-0 to Mexico.

"I think every team will want to improve but we hit a level that is comparable to anything that I've seen," Southgate told Sky Sports News.

"I'm very pleased with so much of what we've done, pleased with the mentality of the players and for keeping their patience.

"To win the game in the manner we did in the end was pleasing. It is important for them that they got a game under their belt, that they played well, that they experienced what it feels like to win with England in a big tournament.

"It's a memory that will stay with everybody. Now we have to build on that."

England's next Group G game is against Panama in Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday.
