A single goal was enough to give Greuther Furth an away win at Mainz this evening.
The match started in scrappy fashion, with each team committing several fouls in the opening minutes.
It was the home team who created the first real chance when Adam Szalai found space inside the box, but his low shot was saved.
Andreas Ivanschitz and Niko Bungert also had chances to give Mainz the lead before half-time but were unable to hit the target.
After the break, Mainz continued to create chances. First Maxim Choupo-Moting headed over, and then Szalai missed once more, shooting wide from close range.
They were made to pay for their profligacy, when Greuther Furth took the lead through Felix Klaus 20 minutes into the second half.
Mainz pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Choupo-Moting was denied twice in quick succession before Eugen Polanksi saw his long-range effort tipped over the bar.
Greuther Furth move into eighth in the Bundesliga, leapfrogging Mainz, who sit eleventh.
