Late Peterborough United surge stuns Leyton Orient

Peterborough United score twice in the final two minutes to earn a 2-1 victory away to Leyton Orient in League One.

Peterborough United scored twice in the final two minutes to earn a 2-1 victory away against Leyton Orient in League One this afternoon.

David Mooney - starting his first match in two months - looked set to mark his return to first-team duties in heroic fashion by firing his team to the top of England's third tier. However, Britt Assombalonga levelled matters with an 88th-minute equaliser, before Tommy Rowe smashed home the winner shortly after to seal the smash-and-grab for Darren Ferguson's men.

Despite their lofty status and home-field advantage, Russell Slade's men found themselves under pressure in the opening stages, with Danny Swanson and Rowe both going close for Posh inside 15 minutes.

However, Orient soon found their rhythm and were unfortunate not to record a 1-0 half-time lead, with Dean Cox volleying Scott Cuthbert's against the post shortly before the interval.

Shwan Jalal, who signed on a one-month loan from Bournemouth on Friday, produced a smart save on his debut to ensure parity remained, tipping Assombalonga's effort onto the post in the second half.

Mooney broke the deadlock with 20 minutes of normal time remaining, making a darting run to reach a Lloyd James free kick before glancing his header beyond the clutches of goalkeeper Robert Olejnik.

Ferguson's troops drew level through Assombalonga, who nodded home the equaliser in the closing minutes of normal time, before Rowe snatched the victory by firing the winner past Olejnik from the edge of the area.
