Sir Alex Ferguson believes that footballers need to be more responsible on the pitch with regards to diving and dissent.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that it is imperative for footballers to set a good example to youngsters on the pitch.

Diving has become a much-discussed issue within the game this season, with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur winger Gareth Bale, United's Ashley Young and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez being labelled 'divers' on a number of occasions.

"One thing that impacts is players' behaviour in terms of simulation and dissent," the Daily Star quotes Ferguson as saying. "It's an important issue because you have to be a role model for young people.

"Young kids growing up are playing Under-7 football, Under-8 football and we have to have a responsibility in terms of the future of the game."

Meanwhile, the Scotsman witnessed his side progress into the fourth round of the FA Cup after overcoming West Ham United 1-0 in a third-round replay at Old Trafford last night.
