Louis van Gaal: 'Luke Shaw is not fit enough'

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal states his unhappiness with the fitness levels shown by Luke Shaw following his return to pre-season.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has claimed that Luke Shaw needs to improve his fitness ahead of the new Premier League season.

Speaking on the club's tour of the United States, the Dutchman stated his unhappiness with the condition in which his new £30m left-back returned to pre-season.

The Daily Mail quotes Van Gaal as saying: "Luke needs to be fit and he's not very fit and can't perform how I want. He needs to be fit and to train individually.

"I can't judge why. I see what I see. I have spoken with him and we have made a programme with him. He has agreed. We will have to see how long it takes. I don't know."

Shaw was part of the England squad that was knocked out of the World Cup at the group stage.
